PET CARE: always important numbers for a sector that won't stop
There are 80 million families in Italy that have at least one pet and about half of these have a dog or a cat. A sector therefore, that of pet care, which over the years has never seen demand stop.
In Europe there are 132 manufacturing companies and more than 200 factories. The turnover before the pandemic for pet food alone amounted to 21 billion euros. But not just food. All accessories for the welfare of our animals have generated revenues of 8.5 billion euros (again in the pre-covid era), while services have reached 10 billion euros.
An interesting fact concerns the population of domestic animals in the various European countries, where Russia holds the record for the number of dogs and cats and Italy is instead in first place with regard to birds: however, always showing great attention and interest towards the world of animals.
And in a pandemic era? Let's face it right away: the sector held up well.
In 2020 the Italian market grew by 4.2% compared to 2019, developing a turnover of more than 2 billion euros. Volumes are also up (+ 2%). Sales within pet shops, chains and grocery stores reached 2,257 million euros. To these data are added the results obtained by the specialized formats of large-scale distribution. The turnover within this channel reached 34.3 million euros.
And if we only look at the accessories, the numbers are also positive here. The values in consumer goods reached 72.8 million euros. The most successful segment was that of hygiene (mats, sanitary napkins, wipes, shampoos, brushes, deodorants and other beauty products), with sales of almost 33 million euros, up 14.7% compared to the last year. Toys for cats and dogs are also growing strongly, with a turnover close to 6 million euros (+ 1.7%). Cat litter, separately detected, in 2020 saw sales of over 76 million euros in the large-scale retail channel, with a growth in value of 3.1%.
A new line, completely 100% MADE IN ITALY, is therefore rightly inserted in this context, creating innovative and unique products on the accessories market.
